What makes dry ice sublime
Since opposite charges even partial ones attract, water is really sticky. It just needs high enough temperature and low enough pressure. So you can see bubbles form, rise, and then, wait, is that fog I see??? As in condensed water vapor? NOT the air! Instead, the fog you see comes from the water that the ice was dropped into. And when those interface water molecules left the interface to enter the bubble, they freed up space for new water molecules to get a chance at escape.
So those molecule vaporize in too. Have the graduated cylinder and empty dry ice container ready. Fill the graduated cylinder with warm or hot water. Equip yourself with the safety equipment. Tell the students that it is changing from a solid to gas phase, which is visible as the fog coming off the solid piece. Place the dry ice into the graduated cylinder, and watch the clouds form.
Take off your gloves and wave your hand over the clouds. What is happening to the dry ice? To dispose of excess dry ice, place it in an empty container and leave it to sublimate in an open, secure and safe area with good ventilation. Ensure that the students do not go near it. Extensions Why do the clouds move downwards? So use tongs, keep dry ice in a well-ventilated area, and stick with regular ice for your summertime refreshments.
